Membership Criteria
WiLAI membership is focused specifically on C-suite level leaders involved in the creation of legal AI products, initiatives, and companies, as well as in the practice of law around AI issues, and decision-makers in the funding of corporate, law firm, and other for-profit legal AI endeavors. These experts comprise WiLAI's four categories of senior legal AI influencers: Founders, Funders, Lawyers, and Leaders.
While not currently encompassed within WiLAI's immediate lens,* WiLAI also honors and admits women involved in involved in the implementation, deployment, administration, and governance of legal AI, as WiLAI Allied Members.
Allied Members include legal AI leaders academia, advocacy, legal nonprofits, and government regulation. We robustly encourage interaction among the women in all these groups.
*This distinction reflects our foremost concern about the marked gap in the inclusion and representation of women in influential, decision-making roles shaping the substance and funding of legal AI at a holistic level.
For more information about the urgent need to eliminate gender bias in the shaping and funding of AI, and the consequences of ignoring that bias, please read our Gender Parity Facts & Figures here and in the Resources section of our Women in Legal AI news site (at WomenInLegalAI.com).

<15%
15% OF AI LEADERS OVERALL
While 30% of the broader AI workforce are women, the number drops to 15% as you move up the ranks.

30%
30% OF LAWYERS HELMING AI PRACTICE GROUPS
Fewer than one-third of the heads of client-facing AI practice groups are women, again, in firms with approximately 50% women in their lawyer ranks.

32%
32% OF LEGAL AI LEADERS
Fewer than one-third of AI chief-level roles in law firms are held by women, even though half the workforce in those firms are women.
In corporate law departments, the proportion may not be much better. (Stay tuned for the details.)

OUR GOALS
WiLAI exists to normalize and celebrate women leaders in LegalAI.
Women in Legal AI (WiLAI) was formed to provide scaffolding to:
1) support women leaders driving the substantive development of legal AI,
2) amplify and promote their accomplishments and endeavors, and
3) build a community that connects and magnifies these women through more proportional:
-
industry inclusion and recognition, including speaking engagements, rankings and lists, and other industry accolades;
-
workplace parity in hiring, promotions, and compensation;
-
media coverage; and
-
venture investment and other external and internal funding.
Here at WomeninLegalAI.org, we believe these disparities are unintentional.
Further, we posit that armed with these statistics along with an understanding of the causes and recommended solutions, law firms, VC firms, and law departments will enthusiastically commit to achieving greater gender parity in legal AI roles in leadership and all levels.
We believe that spotlighting the many achievements of women already in legal AI roles will create even more enthusiasm to increase their ranks.
For details and sources of the above and related statistics, please visit the Resources section of our news site at www.womeninlegalai.com.
